So you’ve decided to learn to play piano online, but don’t know where to start?
If so, you’ve come to the right place. In this brief tutorial I’ll go through the basics of how to learn to play piano for free, tips for learning to play piano for a beginner, and the ultimate best way to learn piano yourself, using resources that are readily available, and inexpensive.
Learning to Play Piano for a Beginner
The first topic I want to address is what to do if you’re a total beginner. If that’s the case, the first thing you’re going to want to do is to familiarize yourself with all of the piano keys, and start to learn to read music.
My best recommendation for getting the basics down, including an introduction to several different piano styles, is to check out Piano for All, which is perhaps the easiest method I’ve seen to get you up and running and playing some great beginner tunes!
How To Learn To Play Piano for Free
Once you have the basics down, it’s time to take your skills to the next level. Fortunately, there are a ton of great resources out there that will help you figure out how to learn to play piano for free.
If I were you, I’d focus on the following aspects:
- First and foremost, you’re going to need to master your scales. The best way to improve your technique, without getting any instruction, is to go through all of the major and minor scales until you know them by heart.
- Another skill you need to master is chord development. This is a little more complicated than the scales, and may require some instruction for you to truly nail them all, and understand the relationships between them. There’s a great, brief tutorial from 8notes you can glance through to help.
Ultimately, however, you’re going to need to get some sort of instructional help. While private classes can be prohibitively expensive, there are a ton of good online piano lessons available for free and cheap.
By far the best free program is Learn Piano In 30 Days, which quickly takes you past the beginner basics and into intermediate territory.
The Best Way To Learn Piano Yourself
Finally, the absolute best way to learn piano yourself is to sign up for a dedicated program that meets your needs. While you could by a few technique and songbooks and try to figure things out yourself, my belief is that following along with a dedicated course is the only real way you’re going to learn.
The top courses will give you a ton of background information, that will both put your practicing into context and help you understand how to play correctly, and why the material is important.
